Equality NC's Chris Sgro Receives Inaugural Arcus Foundation Leadership Fellowship

Equality NC's executive director Chris Sgro was chosen to the inaugural cohort of Arcus LGBT Leadership Initiative Fellows. The fellowships will support the efforts over the next year of eleven U.S.-based leaders of the LGBT movement.

POLL: NC Support for Marriage Equality on the Rise

A new poll released on September 20, 2013, from NC-based Elon University Polling found that 43% of North Carolinians now support full marriage equality for same-gender couples. This represents a five percentage point increase in support for the freedom to marry in only seven months.

POLL: 73% of North Carolinians Oppose Employment Discrimination Directed at Gay and Transgender Workers

A new poll released on September 9, 2013, from NC-based Public Policy Polling (PPP) found that the vast majority of North Carolinians (73%) think employers should not be able to discriminate against gay and transgender workers compared to just 16 percent who think they should be able to. Currently North Carolina workers can be legally fired for either being gay or transgender or being perceived as gay or transgender.

Equality NC Responds to Appointment of Anti-Gay Author to UNC-TV Board

Equality NC responded today to the news that controversial anti-gay author Orson Scott Card has been named to the UNC-TV Board of Trustees, appointed by Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger, R-Guilford. Card, a Greensboro resident who once compared Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler, was appointed this week to the board for a two-year term.

Chapel Hill Leaders Release Statement Encouraging Town to Sever Relationship With Anti-LGBT Russian Sister City

Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt and Chapel Hill Town Council Member Lee Storrow released a joint statement today in support of severing Chapel Hill’s sister-city relationship with Saratov, Russia. Kleinschmidt and Storrow, who are both openly-gay, said they would petition Chapel Hill's Town Council to end the relationship with Saratov, Russia in light of Russia’s new anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) law banning “homosexual propaganda” that has led to government-sanctioned violence against LGBT Russians.

Equality NC Names Chris Sgro Executive Director

Equality NC and its Board of Directors announced today that Chris Sgro, a senior Congressional staffer for U.S. Senator Kay Hagan, with extensive experience advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) North Carolinians, will serve as the new executive director for Equality NC, the state’s leading LGBT advocacy organization. Sgro will begin his tenure with the Raleigh-based organization on September 6.

UNC Board of Governors Ban Gender Neutral Housing

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors voted Friday morning to eliminate proposed gender-neutral housing plans on the system's 16 campuses. The vote will force officials at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to eliminate planned efforts to offer gender-neutral housing options to students beginning in 2013-14.

ACLU Moves to Challenge NC’s Amendment One

Today the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) announced plans to challenge North Carolina’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples by amending a federal lawsuit filed against the state last year on behalf of six same-sex couples and their children that challenges North Carolina’s ban on second parent adoptions. The announcement comes on the same day that the ACLU has filed a federal challenge to Pennsylvania’s marriage ban and the ACLU and Lambda Legal have announced a challenge to Virginia’s marriage ban.

Equality NC joined leaders from other LGBT advocacy groups and representatives from regional and national businesses today at a press conference led by the Human Rights Campaign highlighting the need for expanded employment protections for LGBT workers.

Take action: As of now, the UNC Board of Governors is considering doing exactly what we were able to avoid during this recent session in the North Carolina legislature: a ban on gender-inclusive housing at the 17 UNC System campuses. The Board of Governors will meet on August 8 and 9, to determine whether to strip gender-inclusive housing options that have been shown to not only promote LGBT student safety but also improve overall campus climate as well.
