Equality North Carolina Condemns SCOTUS Decision To Upload Blatant Partisan Gerrymandering
Raleigh – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled against challenges to partisan gerrymandering in states across America, a practice that has negatively impacted the voting rights of marginalized folks living all across North Carolina.
It’s no secret that North Carolina Republicans have gerrymandered voting maps in order to maintain Republican power and control across our state. While the Trump administration's stacked Supreme Court may think that the actions of the NC GOP aren’t unconstitutional, Equality NC knows that representation matters. The gerrymandering of voting maps across North Carolina has systematically silenced the voices of our communities.
Equality NC Executive Director Kendra R. Johnson said today:
“Gerrymandering is a deplorable practice that has enabled Republicans to maintain power and control in unconstitutional ways throughout the state of North Carolina. The decision to not hold these lawmakers accountable continues to underscore the Trump administration's disregard for the most vulnerable Americans, and their interest in self-preservation above ethical and equitable democratic systems. Equality NC stands with families and individuals across North Carolina who continue to be disenfranchised under North Carolina’s unjust voting maps.”
