FOREST CITY, N.C. -- This afternoon, The Lake Lure Classical Academy school board in Rutherford county voted 5-3 to suspend all extra curricular activities for K-12 students. The vote came as a response to parents voicing opposition to newly formed LGBT groups. Chris Sgro, Equality NC’s executive director, issued the following statement in response to the vote.

“From Murphy to Manteo, LGBT and ally students enrolled in all schools should have spaces to feel safe and welcome. The primary avenue gay and transgender youth find those spaces is in LGBT clubs. It is shameful that the school board voted not only against LGBT students, but all students looking to grow and expand their education. It is the responsibility of school boards to protect its students, not to listen to a vocal minority of bigotry. Equality NC will work with its partners to ensure students in every North Carolina county feel safe at school.”

Equality NC is calling on the Lake Lure Classical Academy school board to revisit this vote in their next meeting.
