BREAKING: Marriage Equality in North Carolina
Same-Sex Couples Can Marry in the Tar Heel State
GREENSBORO, N.C. (October 10, 2014) – Days after the Supreme Court declined to hear state appeals in support of a ban on same-sex marriage on Monday, a federal judge in North Carolina has today ruled Amendment One unconstitutional, allowing same-sex couples to marry across the state.
Late Friday afternoon, Honorable Max Cogburn, a federal judge in Charlotte ruled the state's ban on marriage equality is now history.
Equality NC, the state's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender advocacy organization, immediately responded, calling this "a historic day" for North Carolina.
"Today's ruling allowing loving, same-sex couples to marry across North Carolina is a historic moment for our state," said Chris Sgro, executive director of Equality NC. "With it, we celebrate with so many North Carolinians who have worked tirelessly over decades to change hearts, minds, and unequal laws in the state we call home. Love won and the barriers to it are done."
Equality NC will be at register of deeds offices on Friday in Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, and Wilmington, as the organization stands with loving couples experiencing the freedom to marry for the very first time.
