Equality NC Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Marriage Equality

Raleigh - Today marks the one year anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision that brought marriage equality to all loving same-sex couples across the United States. "Obergefell v. Hodges was a landmark decision that validated the love of LGBT couples and families across the nation." said Chris Sgro, Equality NC Executive Director. "We are thankful for Jim Obergefell's determination, who worked through heartbreak and difficulties, to bring equality to families all over the United States. While we celebrate and commemorate the anniversary today, we should be reminded that there is still a lot of work to be done. So called religious refusal and bathroom bills have taken the country by storm in the wake of marriage equality. LGBT people can get married on Sunday and fired on Monday for simply being who they are. Since 1979, Equality NC has fought for equality for LGBT North Carolinians. During this time we have experienced many brick walls and setbacks. People have put their sweat, blood and tears into the fight for equality and when we are able to celebrate victories such as today, we know that their work was not in vain. Equality NC will never stop fighting for equality until every LGBT is fully protected from discrimination."
