Brandon Announces Bid for High Point Mayor

High Point, N.C. — State Representative Marcus Brandon (D-60) announced his candidacy for Mayor of High Point on Friday. As North Carolina's only openly-gay legislator, Brandon is currently serving his second term in the North Carolina General Assembly; his tenure began in 2011. Current Mayor Bernita Sims is not seeking reelection.

A native of High Point, Brandon serves a district that contains most of the eastern part of the city. Since beginning his time in the legislature, Brandon has won Legislator of the Year awards from SEIU/SEANC and Equality NC.

When reached for comment, Brandon issued the following statement:

“The needs of High Point are indeed great, but I know that our people and resources are far greater. I have the political experience of working in the General Assembly, but can still bring the fresh perspective required to move our city forward. Further, I am tired of all the partisan rhetoric of the legislature. I am extremely excited to come home and get things done.”
