Raleigh, N.C. – Equality NC, the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, responded tonight to the N.C. Senate’s vote to override Governor Pat McCrory’s veto of Senate Bill 2, the magistrates recusal bill. The governor vetoed the bill Friday morning, following a statement released by his office on Thursday afternoon that no public official should be discharged from their solemn oath.

Equality NC executive director Chris Sgro immediately condemned the vote, saying, “We are disappointed to see that the Senate voted tonight against the best interests of LGBT people and of the entire state of North Carolina. From the business community to local leaders across the state to the governor, North Carolinians have stood up and said Senate Bill 2 is deeply problematic legislation. This legislation aims to discriminate against same-sex couples, and in the process creates problems for all seeking taxpayer-funded public services.”

Senate Bill 2 now heads to the House for a final vote on whether to override or approve the veto.

Sgro added, “We remain grateful for the governor’s veto and we look to the North Carolina House to do the right thing and stand by his decision.”

Equality NC is now turns its attention to the N.C. House, and calls on its supporters to contact their representatives to ask them to sustain the veto.
